as Mollusca (Coleoidea) and precursors of Cambrian Nectocaridids and extant cuttlefish and squid. Abstract A functional interpretation of the problematic Ediacaran fossils Podolimurus and similar organisms such as Dickinsonia indicates that they are hitherto unrecognized members of Mollusca: Coleoidea and precursors of Cambrian Nectocaridids and of extant cuttlefish and squid. This interpretation enables a new understanding of their taphonomy and reveals how this has deceived previous attempts to understand them.

The Cambrian Explosion Remains an Enigma for Organic Evolution
According to the conventional evolutionary-uniformitarian time scale of Earth history, multicellular organisms first appeared in abundance about 550 million years ago, in the "Big Bang of Evolution," the Cambrian explosion. But (again, according to the conventional time scale) a handful of odd multicellular organisms existed before the astonishing explosion of new forms in the Cambrian. These o...
متن کاملThe rhodopsin gene of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis: sequence and spectral tuning.
The cephalopod molluscs are a group of invertebrates that occupy a wide range of oceanic photic environments. They are an ideal group of animals, therefore, in which to study the evolution of rhodopsin. The cDNA sequence of the rhodopsin gene of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (L.) (Sub-class Coleoidea, Order Sepiida) is presented, together with an analysis of the structure of the gene. A prol...
متن کاملGenus-level phylogeny of cephalopods using molecular markers: current status and problematic areas
Comprising more than 800 extant species, the class Cephalopoda (octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses) is a fascinating group of marine conchiferan mollusks. Recently, the first cephalopod genome (of Octopus bimaculoides) was published, providing a genomic framework, which will enable more detailed investigations of cephalopod characteristics, including developmental, morphological, and ...
متن کاملThe youngest Ediacaran fossils from southern Africa.
Discovery of fossils of the Ediacara biota near the top of the Spitzkopf Member at farm Swanpunt extends the known range of these remains in Namibia more than 600 m to near the sub-Cambrian unconformity. The fossiliferous beds occur approximately 100 m above a volcanic ash dated at 543 +/- 1 Ma, and thus may be the youngest Proterozoic Ediacara-type fossils reported anywhere in the world. Fossi...
متن کاملPalaeobiology: Ecological Revelations in Ediacaran Reproduction
The biology of Ediacaran organisms - the oldest fossils of large multicellular life - has been notoriously hard to decipher, as they show little obvious relation to extant life forms. Ecological analyses, rather than anatomy, yield new revelations about their reproduction.
